HVAC AND CONTROLS

JOHNSON CONTROLS INC.

INTEGRATED COMFORT CONTROLS

Johnson Controls Inc. is a global leader in commercial and industrial building controls.  BDA worked with JCIin numerous technology and product innovations for more than a decade.

In an early pioneering study of first generation digital controls for commercial buildings, we analyzed energy use for different control strategies at the one million sq.ft. headquarters of the Public Service Electric & Gas Company in Newark, N.J.  The study was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy.

Later we worked with JCI in the early development of personal comfort controls and flexible workspaces, on a product referred to as Personal Environmental Modules (PEMs).

BDA also assisted its energy services group in contract negotiations for some large institutional clients.

CALMAC

THERMAL STORAGE AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Thermal storage technology shifts energy use to reduce peak-electrical demands and energy costs.  Calmac has been the world leader in ice storage technology with millions of square feet of properties throughout the world.

BDA worked with Calmac on a technical and marketing campaign to educate the industry on the Advantages of thermal storage, introduce it to key decision-makers in the engineering community, and shepherd the first large, commercial installations in New York City at the new headquarters of Goldman Sachs.

UNITED TECHNOLOGIES/ CARRIER CORPORATION

MODULAR AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS

United Technologies / Carrier Corporation developed a Prototype modular system for commercial air conditioning that it first introduced in Paris at La Defense.  While at the Tishman organization, Barry Donaldson provided engineering and construction advice, evaluated applications in different climate regions, and the cost/benefits in different markets.

The system, referred to as the “Air Transport Module” proved to be of limited application in more extreme climates and buildings with more advanced temperature controls.

YORK INTERNATIONAL

MODULAR INTEGRATED TERMINAL

York Internationalasked BDA to evaluate a new underfloor air distribution system that utilizes a fan-powered box located beneath a raised floor.  This was the first generation of the York Modular Integrated Terminal (MIT).

We evaluated air flow and thermal stratification using computational fluid dynamics software to determine the efficiency of air distribution.  The results led to engineering guidelines for the layout of the MIT and a marketing campaign to promote personal comfort control.

THE TRANE COMPANY

HVAC & COMMERCIAL CONTROL SYSTEMS

The Trane Company has been a leader in air conditioning systems since the 1930’s.  Today it is an international organization of product and services companies.

BDA worked with Trane to introduce its energy efficient “Earthwise” systems to the architectural and engineering community.
