THE GARRISON INSTITUTE

JONATHAN ROSE COMPANIES

The original Capuchin monastery building, built in 1928, was renovated and converted to a center for meditation and retreat. The “Institutes mission is to connect the wisdom of the world’s contemplative traditions with environmental and social action.” Work involved energy and cost feasibility studies and sustainable consulting, focused on design strategies that take advantage of natural sunlight, prevailing winds from the nearby Hudson River, and zoning of spaces to provide good environmental control. The analysis looked at the interior temperature conditions and percent of people satisfied for different design options. Green features include an energy efficient boiler, natural ventilation, and local materials.

Building: 70,000 sf, 5 stories, 12 acre site
